Donald asks…

if i run a mile 4 times a week for 2 months what will happen?

if i get on the treadmill and walk one lap, run one lap, and walk the last. speed walking that is.
in 2 months how much weight do you think i will have lost?

i’m 14. weigh 100 pounds. but i have a fat stomach and i want to get it flat by summer. and a tiny tiny double chin forming:/

Maricela answers:

You must not be very tall, 100 pounds is pretty light. You need to be sure to take advice from the internet with a grain of salt – there is no regulation on what you’re being told, so just because someone sounds sure of themselves doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about.

Your stomach and chin are likely more perception than reality – you think they look worse than they do, because you are a teenage girl, and many have body issues. You won’t gain much fitness or lose much weight with what you’ve proposed, for 3 reasons. 1) Unless you are very short, you probably don’t have much fat to lose. The last pounds are the hardest. 2) You just don’t burn that many calories running 4 miles per week. A mile is roughly 100 calories as a rule of thumb, but for someone your size this is being very generous – you probably only burn 80 or 90 calories per mile. A pound of fat is 3500 calories. 3) Your diet may not allow it. If you’re eating lots of sweets and fried foods instead of whole grains and healthy things, no amount of exercise will help you lose weight.

Some things I’m having trouble with here guys:

How will sit ups help? It is proven science that you cannot target weight loss, and generally accepted that sit ups and crunches are the least effective ab workouts anyway. Also, nobody gains ab muscle, they aren’t like your biceps, it takes a lot of very heavy weight work to actually make your abs bigger. Also, if someone can’t spell “muscles” with a computer equipped with spell checker, why would anybody take advice about muscles from them?

Why is it better to run outside for weight loss? It may be better if you’re training to race, but at slower paces, just for exercise, there is little difference between the two.

How do you all project that she will lose weight, given the small amount of exercise, and knowing nothing about her diet?

How does a physical therapist not understand basic math? 2 pounds per week over 8 weeks (2 months) is 56,000 calories. Her plan burns 3,200 calories – one pound of fat, total. 2 pounds per week is about the max that someone can lose safely when they are significantly overweight.

Thomas asks…

how to properly start fasting?

i was planning on starting a fast, and im not really sure how to properly do so

Do i need to exclude water as well as food?

If you have fasted before, please tell me what it is like

P.S. im not a teenage girl……

Maricela answers:

Depending on the fast, there are varied rules. Most fasts dictate no food during the day, only water or at most, fruit juices, and a small meal at night. Jewish fasts are done between sunrise and sunset, and normal eating resumes after/before that. It is recommended that if you are going to fast for a long time, for instance, lent, you do the above, however, if you are fasting for a short time, say, a week, it is better to limit food intake to a small meal at night, and water or juice during the day.

Some have the stamina to subsist without food altogether, but this will slow your metabolism down, which is NOT what anyone wants, either religious or weight loss.

Good luck, and take care.

Oh, and don’t forget the rule of 3: Three weeks without food, three days without water, three minutes without air. (Hence, why you should drink water. 🙂 )

Lizzie asks…

Teenage Girl B2S Shopping websites?

What websites do you recommend for a teen girl to buy online from? Also how much money do you think is appropriate for back to school shopping a girl going into her junior year of high school, taking into consideration that I need new everything pretty much due to weight loss.
I plan to buy from:
Gilly Hicks
Hot Topic
Glamour Kills

Thank you!

Maricela answers:

Aeropostale, American Eagle, Forever 21, Hollister, Abercrombie, Victoria Serect are all good stores. Victoria Serect is for Yoga Pants and Sweatshirts really. And 500 is good. If you are including shoes, try Payless, Journey’s, and Nike.

David asks…

Weight-loss for almost-overweight 13 year old girl?

I’m 13 years old, I am 5 feet tall, and I weigh 118 lbs. My BMI is 23.0, and I know I’m not overweight, but I rarely exercise and I don’t eat healthy. Do you have any tips for weight loss, especially for my thighs? I don’t want any self-respect ‘you are beautiful’ crap. I don’t like being this weight and I need a plan to stick to. Thanks in advance.

Maricela answers:

-Don’t drink any pop, juice (it’s high in sugar). No chips, cookies, and any other junk foods like that.
-Only drink WATER, and a lot of it every day. Like, 8 glasses of water a day.
-For a teenage girl, you’re gonna want to eat around 1500-1800 calories.
-Healthy foods: Apples, Blueberries, Kiwis, Grapes, Baby Carrots, Celery, Spinach (I know it’s gross, try putting some in a salad or something), plain grilled chicken breast, Almonds, Greek Yogurt (Chobani is a good brand), Cottage Cheese (Look for low/non fat varieties).
-Replace white bread with whole grain/wheat bread
-DO NOT starve yourself, your body will go into starvation mode, and will store all the food you eat as fat. It will also slow down your metabolism.
-Jog on the treadmill for a half an hour 4-5 days a week.
In the beginning, allow yourself a cheat day, where you can eat a few little extra treats. Some healthier treat choices are something like Weight Watchers fudge bars (YUM!) or slow-churned ice creams.
At your height, I’d go no lower than 100 lbs.

Mark asks…

Is this a good weight loss plan for a teenage girl ?

So for food , I eat moderately healthy ( the only things I drink are water and soy milk ) and I don’t eat much junk food .
For exercise , I do 75 squats a day , 30 curl ups , and I jog like 20 minutes , and walk like 30 minutes .
If I keep this up , could I lose a lot of weight ? And is this a good weight loss plan ? Or how could I make it better ?
By the way , I’m 13 , 5’1 , and 129 lbs .
Oh , and I’ve been a vegetarian for 11 months .

Maricela answers:

If you have access to a gym or some sort of machines, try doing these exercises with weights. That will get you toned, but if you are solely looking to lose weight, yes running and eating healthy will get rid of your fat. Lay off the calories, or at least cut down on them, and cut down on carbs too. Everything else seems great. Keep it up. Don’t lose determination because that is more than half of the deal. If you really want to lose weight, you will.
