Mark asks…

How do I get fit without losing weight?

Since marching band is just around the corner, I need to get ready for band camp. People don’t realize how much muscle and energy it takes up starting at 6am and working your butt of untill 9pm. I don’t want to be that unlucky person who ends up passing out.

I’m really skinny but EXTREMLY lazy and I want to find a fast and effective way to get fit without losing weight because I really dont need to lose weight.

Any tips for marching band, band camp, or getting fit I’d like your advise! (:

Maricela answers:

You are totally right about working your butt off in band camp! I was in Marching band throughout high school. I think you should try doing three things:

1. Increase the amount of protein in you diet. Protein will not make you gain weight if you get it from the right sources, like tuna or eggs, and you get some excersize. Protein is found in eggs, milk, meat, fish, beans, tofu, nuts. You don’t get much protein from candy, fruit, veggies, junk food, or soda pop.

2. Walk! Walking helps you to tone up, increase endurance, and really won’t make you lose too much weight if you don’t overdo it, and you increase your protein in take.

3. Do just a little bit of low weight, weight lifting. This will help you build muscle, which weighs more than fat, So you won’t lose weight, you might even gain just a little, while you are toning up.

If you do these things you will not pass out, and you will be able to give your best all day at camp!! ALSO DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!! ALL THE TIME!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

Joseph asks…

Is walking a good way to lose weight?

I have been walking on the treadmill for 60 minutes a day, and do about 3 miles a day. Is this a good way to lose weight? Any tips or suggestions?

Maricela answers:

It’s a great way to start a cardio regime, and 3 miles is a pretty good distance.

You might want to gradually build up intensity… Gradually increasing speed will burn more calories. I used the Couch to 5K program at to build up to running 3 miles. Be careful not to overdo it – you are in a great routine so far!

Sandy asks…

What is an extreemely fast way to lose weight?

I am interested in losing weight fast, I need tips on this.

Maricela answers:

If you want to loose weight you have to work at it, stay away from heavy weights and lifting them because this will make your body gain muscle weight, do cardiovascular training such as swimming, running and even sex. This eats away at the fat content and if done for more than an hour it will start to eat away at the muscle. A good diet is also requited. Eat complex carbs instead of regular carbs. Complex carbohydrate will give you a steady release of energy where as you would get a burst of energy with regular carbs, this is usually never used up and turns to fat. Stay away from all carbs before bed maybe eat a bowl of scrambled egg with cheese and a glass of milk before bed. This will repair the muscled from the exercise you’ve done throughout the day.

Stay away from unhealthy foods try and get your 5 fruit and veg a day. And 2 liters of water, you wont just loose weight you’ll be all round healthy.

Helen asks…

I have to ask about major tips in losing weight?

Good am to all. I am just asking help or tips in losing weight. I am now second year college and I weight around 90KG I think its overweight, I feel so heavy, Can I ask tips on what to do, what eat, and what to take? I just wanna lose my weight back to around 70-75KG. And how Can I avoid food, Its really hard to avoid it.

Maricela answers:

I can definitely help. First and foremost, you have to have a clean diet. Without a proper diet, you will have a hard time losing weight. Diet makes up roughly 90% of the battle. Don’t be that person at the gym who busts their tail off yet allows the hard work to go down the drain b/c they eat like crap.

That being said, what foods to eat?

Stick to a more lean protein/green veggie diet. Lean protein sources include chicken breast, turkey breast, fish, egg whites, lean beef such as sirloin, cottage cheese etc. The majority of your carbs should come from leafy greens such as asparagus, broccoli, kale, salad etc. Green veggies are very low in carb, full of fiber and are slower digesting.

Stay away from refined carbs. Refined carbs are your white breads, white pasta etc. Eat whole grains but in moderation such as brown rice. Even though brown rice is superior to white rice, you still need to monitor your carbs so have these grains more on workout days for energy and adjust accordingly.

Workout wise, a combination of free weights and cardio 3-4 times a week is optimal. Weight lifting helps burn more calories at rest.
