How do I get more courage for losing weight?

I’m really nervous about running in my neighborhood. I feel like everyone is judging me. How do I just get up and get out?! Please help me. I really need to lose weight!

I am 6’4, 200 pounds, all muscle and really defined, good looking guy (yes that’s bragging but I’m making a point), former Israeli infantry with combat experience, competed in sports all my life, etc etc.

Even with all that, I too get nervous when I run in public! Even now as I’m training for a 10k race in two weeks, I avoid running on the main street because I know I’ll see people I know. And, what really sucks, is that that main street is a great place for running b/c it has a big sidewalk and it’s flat (I live in a VERY hilly city). So, even given that I physically have nothing to worry about in terms of running, I still get nervous about people looking at me!

So how do you get over it? Well, the more you run the better you’ll feel about yourself. I think you really need to use this as motivation to run more, to lose weight. I mean, if you get out there and push yourself and you eat properly (VERY important), you ARE 100% going to lose weight.

You’ve heard of a “vicious cycle”? Well, this is a positive, good cycle! The more you run, the more weight you lose. The more weight you lose, the more you’ll want to run. The more you lose and run, the better you’ll feel about yourself and the less nervous you’ll be about doing it all!

But the final tip? Download pictures of bodies you want, on a reasonable scale (not Angelina Jolie, OK?) and print them out and look at them when you need motivation. Also, do “before and after” pictures! All these little tips help keep me motivated!

Is jumping rope a good way to lose weight?

I live in a rainy/cold city and want to lose weight for the new year. I am about 30 pounds heavier than I would like to be.

Is jumping rope a good way to lose weight or will I need to do something like running?

Can anyone recommend a good workout video I am skeptical about how well they work.

Jumproping is an excellent way to lose weight. It tones your your whole body especially your calves. Plus, just 10 minutes of jump roping burns about 100 calories. You can jump rope in intervals through out the day to burn more and more calories. Also dancing is a good way of burning calories and losing weight, plus you can do it in doors. Just dance to your favorite fast paced music, its just like running because your body is moving fast. I don’t really use work out dvds but, is an excellent website in which you can do all types of strength training exercises indoors and doing strength training is great because not only does it tone and trim your body but even after you finish exercising you will continue to burn calories for the next 24 hours which means you’ll burn calories while you sleep!! Which means you’ll maximize your weight loss. Best wishes, I hope this helps.

How do I lose weight in a college setting?

Hi there,

I’m looking for different ways to work out and lose weight while in college. I have always been very overweight my whole life and I want to take whatever free time I have to improve my health and have a better living style. I really don’t have a lot of free time during the week due to my workload but I want to change my living style for the better. Here’s some things about my lifestyle that may help you guys.

1. I live in a dorm and don’t have a lot of space, however I would like to find a way to workout here since whatever free time I have is normally spent here.
2. My school does NOT have a meal plan, however I do have access to a full kitchen. I also have a mini fridge that has a freezer section.
3. I don’t eat fast food, I don’t drink any sodas and I try to avoid junk food however I don’t really know what constitutes a healthy diet.
4. My school doesn’t have any workout facilities and there’s really no spot for me to exercise around me. Is there anyway I can work exercise into my everyday life?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would highly recommend you to read the very well researched and scientifically backed “Why We Are Fat” by Dr. Gary Taubes.

Probably someone will hop on here and scream about him, but you’ll find a hard time finding anyone who can give proper research to refute him. (As in, not just causal hypothesis accepted as fact, but actual rigorous testing of hypothesis in human subjects). You can also read his blog here:

I am no relative of his or anything like that. I have no vested interest in his books or in him. I would never have bought one of his books, but I read it one day from a friend on a whim (it’s not long and dense if you’re a regular reader). I was convinced by his clear logic and sound science and changed our diets immediately. (We were carefully doing all the conventional wisdom stuff that the first responder has already told you, and were still just barely maintaining our obesity and even increasing it slightly at times).

We have been losing weight slowly and steadily every since (2-3 pounds a week), are never hungry, and have a lot more energy and alertness. Although not college students, were in a similar situation to yours: we live in a tiny apartment and an extremely polluted city where exercise outside is dangerous to the lungs. We could never afford the exhorbitant rates of a gym, cook for ourselves entirely, and we didn’t eat junk food, never drank sodas, hardly ever had sweets and ate only whole grains. But we had no actual success till this book.

I want to help people learn how to lose weight online. How to do this?

i’ve lost 35 pounds since January and i did it naturally and the safe way. I did not use any drugs or magic weight loss pills, but I did have to work really hard and exercise. I changed alot of my old eating habits and developed a healthy new diet.There is alot to learn about how to lose weight and it is very hard work, so i want to help other people learn how to do it online. How do i post this sort of information and it what type of ad so that people can see?

Please no rude remarks, i’m searching for a way to actually help people.
I understand that everyone is different, and have different needs. Some people have health condtions. I am not a doctor so i can’t help with everything. But i can help with basic things like depending on height and weight what a healthy wieght and bmi is . different types of exercises. How to track calories (and carbs,protien, fat, fiber)eaten, and calories burned. How to burn 1500 calories in a week. Healthy delicious recipes, ect. I would suggest any one with any health conditions to see a doctor to develope a healty plan though.

Have you considered starting a blog? Or just a simple website that details your success story? People like seeing a success story more than they like seeing a bunch of pills and someone’s hips shrinking animatedly to music.

I don’t know if you’re looking to turn this into a business or non-profit thing or if you’re interested in consulting, you should check your city or state’s small business bureau.

Hey I wanna lose weight im 5’2 and weigh 134 I live in the city so its pretty hard for me to exercise and im 13 please help me out my main goal is to be 110 be the end of june and my body loses weight fast so any suggestions? =]

Cut out all junk food and dessert and fast food.

Eat a lot whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein.

Once a week, “cheat” and eat something you really like!

Join a gym.

Get weights from the store.
