Your Questions About Losing Weight After Baby

George asks…

What to try when a baby is losing weight?

The baby is 1 yr. old, is often hungry, and eats a lot of food. Regular bowel movements after every meal. He has not been gaining weight for three months, and now he is losing weight. The doctor says his size and growth are normal. I would like to try a natural approach if possible. Do enzymes help babies’ bodies utilize food? Any experience or suggestion is welcome.

Maricela answers:

Babies often start to lose weight or stop gaining weight when they become more active. He sounds like he is going through a growth spurt if he is hungry all the time. Feed him when he is hungry, give him plenty of fluids and if the doctor doesn’t seem concerned, then relax. Unless you have talked to your doctor, DO NOT give your child any kind of enzyme. There are things in there that could potentially harm your child.

Any suggestions on how to walk a dog while pushing a baby stroller?

I am almost 7 months pregnant and would like to be able to walk my two dogs to lose weight once the baby is here. However, I will be a single mom with no help, so I need to figure out the best way to do this.

Maricela answers:

Good question! Just get a regular leash (not the retractable kind), and tie it around your wrist if there is not already a loop to hold on to the leash. Then push the baby stroller with two hands, having the leash on your arm. Be careful not to run over the dog if it gets in the way though! Good luck!

Is it safe to lose weight in 1st trimester?

I’m only 5 weeks pregnant. I have been overweight even before pregnancy. Now that i know i’m expecting im getting worried for my health and weight as the pregnancy progresses. My ideal weight is about 55kg but im tipping the scales at 75kg.
Would it be safe for me and baby to think of losing weight in the first trimester? Is a low carb diet a good idea? What kind of exercise should i do and those i should avoid?

Maricela answers:

Probably it is not the best time to lose weight however you should certainly do some exercise. A combination of healthy eating and moderate exercise should help you keep in shape and feel good about yourself.

Don’t forget though that a baby comes with its own baggage so you shouldn’t be aiming at 55kg anyway. You might do really well exercise and food and maintain your weight of 75kg or even lose a little but in either case you have actually lost weight during the pregnancy (when you consider the baby’s weight, birth fluids etc).

Sandy asks…

How do you lose weight after pregnancy?

My son is now two and I have been trying to lose weight since I have had my baby. During my pregnancy I gain around 65 pounds; my pre-pregnancy weight was 135. Right now I am 160 and still trying my best t get to at least 140 but it’s so hard. As for my tummy, while it’s not saggy, it’s not as firm as it was before I had my son. Are there any tips that I can follow as it relates to changing my excercise regimen (I do at least 3 times a week: 20 minutes on the stair climber, 20 minutes on the tredmill, and at least 30 miuntes weight training and abdominal work) and diet.

Maricela answers:

Sometimes its not your activity its your diet. Eating frequent low fat foods will help. The healthiest eating is –
eating about the size of your fist 6 times a day. One meal veggies, next fruit, next breads or meats whatever order u like. Or perhaps you want to dine with the family use the last or first meal of the day and have 2 ozs. Of a meat or soy product. 4ozs. Of fruit or veggie (don’t mix them it will count each other out when digesting.) and max 2 breads. Like a roll and a thin sliver of cake. By not outing the treat u loose the weight faster. Drink warm lemon water and herb tea for cleansing and cut out most (all if u can-dark colored) sodas as 1 soda a day can make u gain almost 15 lbs. Enjoy your baby relax a little and know that common household chores and walking after meals is just as good as the normal weekly work out.

Susan asks…

If I eat a couple small bites of food everyday and take diet pills will i lose weight fast?

after having my baby in may i’ve become obsessed about losing weight i’ve always had a weight problem so now i just want to lose more. I’ve started taking diet pills and I’m never hungry so i just eat little bites here and there of healthy food when i take my diet pills. Will i lose weight pretty quick this way?? Also I’m pretty active because of the baby.
I wasn’t able to breast feed so my baby is on formula, I’m sorry i really should have included that.

Maricela answers:

Eating small amounts is never healthy. Eat a big breakfast, smaller lunch and even smaller dinner with a few snacks in between. The food will give you the energy you need to take care of an infant and it will kick your metabolism in the butt.
Think of the baby too. If you are getting yourself into bad habits, you could pass them on to the kid. You dont want the baby to have the same problems, do you?
Try to follow the nutrition pyramid. Eat a lot of wheats with loads of dairy and plenty of fruits and veggies. The antioxidants in the fruits and veggies will keep your skin and hair looking healthy and youthful. Tomatoes, broccoli and grapes are full of antioxidants.
Trust me, I was fatter than the moon and I started working out and eating right. So far, I havent lost much weight (its been about two weeks), but my friends and co workers tell me that I have a glow about me. I feel healthier too. I can stand up straight and proud of myself. I work at a fast food restaurant, it is not easy for me to eat right, but I try and thats what matters to me.

Good luck with your baby and with your weight loss.
