Michael asks…

Will I lose the weight I want to achieve?

I am trying to lose weight, by eating healthier and been trying to workout everyday, even with a Jilian Michaels video which kills, but I have been on this weight loss for a week and one day, and yes I have list some inches, because my pants are bigger than normal, but that’s not the point. My mom said that I might not lose any other weight just lose inches… If I try harder, can I lose fat in the stomach and arms and thighs? If so what ate some good excersises?

Maricela answers:

Your best bet to lose weight is to utilize a healthy diet intermixed with cardio and weight training. Remember that muscle does weigh more than fat, so while you are working the fat off you will be gaining muscle. There is nothing wrong with being toned! Perhaps if you looked up the principle of muscle confusion. P90x, Insanity, and other programs go by this and definitely work. You want to always push yourself to the best of your ability, but don’t overdo it and wind up hurting yourself.

Best of luck!

Daniel asks…

How do I burn belly fat quickly and get a six pack?

I am 16 years old 5′ 11″ and weigh 160 and in pretty good shape but I cant seem to loss my belly fat. I do 3-4 miles a day and then work on my core for about 15 minutes. I am losing weight but no belly fat and i’ve heard high intensity intervals is better at burning belly fat. If possible I need a way to lose about 3-4 pounds in belly fat in 2 weeks.

Maricela answers:

Hey Seth,

There is unfortunately no way to spot train or lose fat in only one spot, however there are ways to tone up overall and get “cut”
For men, the last fat they lose is always the stomach, but you need to lost fat everywhere else before your abs will start to really show.

I am an independent coach with beach body who makes p90x and insanity which are muscle building and fat loss programs.
If you use them and stick to them you will see huge results, they really work.

INSANITY is an absolutely intense program that I can tell you will rip you into shape and FAST.
You are completely right about high intensity Intreval training and INSANITY is a sixty day program done at home that only needs you, and shoes. No fancy weights or gimmicks and it uses plyometrics to really work your body and all muscle groups every workout.

You will tone, strenghthen and become stronger, and will get abs… I can pretty much guarantee it as long as you stick to the diet and just play play (it’s a DVD program) six days a week!

Trust me, It works.

Crash and fad diets only serve to drain your body of carbs or water and not fat. Yes the scale moves but it isn’t fat loss.

Beware of them.

Chris asks…

How can I get a Victorias Secret model’s body before summer time?

I’ve been consistently losing weight for the past six month but have only lost 25 pounds. I’m 5’5 and weigh 175. I want to weigh 125. How can I get to my goal quickly? What workouts should I do to get the models body?

Maricela answers:

I am glad you hear you are losing weight! If you want weight loss that lasts and to avoid loose skin and stretch marks you should keep it about 2 lbs a week.

I recommend looking up Jennifer Nicole Lee on youtube she is a fitness model and has fun workouts that combine cardio and weight-training.
These are 2 other sites that can give you fresh exercises to add to your routine
(scroll down to video gallery the exercises on this site are very effective but remember as a female to do more reps with a lower weight to avoid bulk)
Running slow long distances is also better to avoid bulk.
Keep your routines varied and choose exercises that are fun that way you will stick to it
I have these workout videos when I can’t get to the gym (Insanity, P90X, and Jillian Micheal 30-day shred). I recommend getting some bands and looking up weight-baring exercises using just your body weight for when you travel that way you can still work out. Do weight-training 2-3 times a week and since you want streamline do about 45 minutes of low weight, high reps.

Here’s a site with lots of healthy recipe ideas you want to keep your diet varied. You diet should also taste good or else how will you stick to it long term? Definitely learn to cook and be adventurous try different cuisines, unfamiliar foods, vegetarian, raw, and vegan meals occasionally too.

Divide plate 1/2 fruit and veg, 1/4 lean protein (that’s about 2-3 oz per meal), 1/4 fiber rich carbs (you need carbs they give you energy, aid in digestion, and in that way increase metabolism) Aim for about 25 grams of fiber a day (if you don’t eat much fiber now gradually increase that number to avoid stomach cramps and messed up periods)

Shoot for b/w 1500-1800 calories a day do not starve yourself and don’t skip meals period if possible 4-6 small meals is preferable if not at least 3 meals with snacks

Don’t eat after 7 pm try to make breakfast the biggest meal and dinner the lightest meal since we tend to be less active in the evenings and you will have more chance to burn off breakfast. If you will eat snacks sometimes eat them earlier. It takes about 3 bites to satisfy a craving. Dark chocolate is great for that.

Eat till you are 80% full don’t stuff yourself

Drop soda and avoid high fructose corn syrup as much as possible

Grapefruit reduces cellulite.

Fat aim for 30 grams and try get mostly Monounsaturated fats (avocados, fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, olives and olive oil, plain nuts and seeds). Get under 14 grams of saturated fat

Reduce sodium intake it will reduce bloating

Look up your favorite restaurants online and check the nutritional info so you can make healthy choices dining out. I recommend ordering side dishes instead b/c then you get the right amount of protein and carbs and you can always order 2 sides of veg.

Pack healthy bentos and picnics for roadtrips so you avoid gas stations and greasy diners

Dancing is fabulous

Jenny asks…

Help does the insanity workout really work?

I just bought the insanity workout and I’m gonna start on Monday and I’m hoping to lose at least 25 pounds by the end of the 2 months. But I’ve been looking at before and after pictures for women and they don’t look that much different at all some even look the same after 60 days sooo I’m worried and it really brings me down cause I want a big difference. So does it work or is it not that good?

Maricela answers:

First off, well done for doing Insanity, it’s a great program because it has a bit of everything and really improves cardiovascular fitness and lean muscle if you really commit to the program and lifestyle. Month 2 is a lot harder (and more satisfying after a complete workout!) than Month 1. The workouts are longer, the warm up is harder and the moves are different so you don’t keep doing the same thing over and over.

Second, what you eat is absolutely critical to your success. Follow the nutrition guide as best as you can. You don’t have to eat the exact meals. Just make sure your diet is 40% carbs, 40% protein and 20% healthy fats. That’s the main rule of the nutrition guide. Eat every 2-3 hours and eat enough! How many calories are you eating and how old are you? I would say eat at about 1800-2300 calories (use and enter your details to get a good number).

Your nutrition needs to be good too. You need to eat something about every 3 hours to keep your metabolism going all day. Make sure you eat something in between breakfast, lunch and dinner such as a snack of fruits, nuts or low fat cheese. Ideally you should be eating something every 3-4 hours to keep your metabolism going constantly. Eat fruits, vegetables, wholemeal/wheat/grain/pulses, lean protein, and healthy fats. Healthy fats are key to weight loss and fitness: soya, seeds and nuts, oily fish, avocados, flaxseeds, extra virgin olive oil etc. You need these in your body. Don’t start crying when you are in the middle of the program and wonder “Why am I not seeing good results?”

Also, take pictures so you can track your progress, it’s the best way to judge how hard you trained and how good your diet was. The only downside to Insanity, for me, is the lack of upper body weight training (using actual weights) – unless you have the Deluxe version with the weights video. Yes, you’re doing a ton of push ups and using your own weight, but getting fully toned around the entire body (especially the abs!) is also about lifting weights (or using bands). You need to combine cardio and weight training to help build lean muscle and lose fat. Weight training isn’t just for people who want to gain muscle mass, it needs to be incorporated into a training program for the best results. Running 5-7 days a week just isn’t enough. Doing weights burns a TON of calories, and by lifting weights, you’ll become stronger and be able to push harder in Insanity. So if you have the deluxe version with the weights video, give it a try. Or move to P90X or a P90X and Insanity hybrid after you finished. This is what I am doing after doing Insanity and am noticing better results with P90X and my diet is 100x better now because I use to track my progress.

Also, remember that it’s not really a 60 or 63 day program. It’s the rest of your life. You can’t go back to eating crap and not exercising once you finished. What’s the point of doing Insanity? Only choose foods from the top 3 tiers of this guide ( and workout 5-7 days a week doing a variety of workouts: cardio and upper body training.

Stay away from coke, pepsi, diet coke/pepsi, chocolate, crisps, doughnuts and takeways eg fish and chips, pizza, Chinese, McDonalds, Burger King etc because this is all poison to your body. The same for alcohol and cigarettes.

Good luck.

Lisa asks…

Do you need any equipment for the Insanity DVD workout system?

I saw on the p90x you needed yoga equipment and weights, do you need that for the Insanity DVDs?

Maricela answers:

P90x gets great reviews, check them out:

You’ll also want some adjustable dumbbells to go along with the program (don’t forget the chin-up bar):

Alternatively you can buy individual dumbbells, which is my personal preference. I like rubber coated HEX dumbbells the best:

You’ll want this p90x chin/pull up bar (that’s door mounted, you might want to search for wall mounted):

You might also want to get pushup bars, I personally use this:

I also suggest resistance bands, I suggest ripcords brand as they don’t break on you (I had to go to the emergency room once because I was using bad ones from a gym, and it snapped and nearly broke my hand by slinging itself):

Get the 5 set or 6 set (don’t get it with the DVD).

I also strongly suggest these auxiliary guides / programs to go along with your muscle training, fat loss, and diet.
Http:// (focused on gaining muscle mass and strength – especially if you are a ‘hardgainer’) (focused on weight loss / fat loss / abs) (focused on foods / diet)

And lastly, you should have a good recovery drink. I prefer this one myself over the p90x specific one:
